Since Dec 17, the Tokyo metropolitan government has raised its alert level regarding the strain on the medical system to the highest on its four tier scale.

TOKYO : On Thursday (Dec 24), the Tokyo metropolitan government announced a record 888 new daily Covid-19 cases. Worries continue to develop about the growing strain on the medical system as cases continue to rise in the city.

The last figure exceeded the previous record of 821 reported on December 17. At the same time, it is taking the city to 54,018, out of 14 million cumulative total infections.

After that, the Tokyo metropolitan government has increased its warning level to the highest on its four-tier scale regarding the strain on the medical system.

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga has said that there is no need to declare a national state of emergency. It is considering the recent increase in virus cases and the strain on the medical system, while more restrictions on bars and restaurants could be placed in place.

But such is the seriousness of the situation here that the Japan Medical Association and eight other health organisations on Monday declared a “medical state of emergency”
