KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysia government may consider using cigarette and tobacco duties to fund programmes to kick the smoking habit, Health Minister Dr Adham Baba said.

He agreed with the proposal put forward by Mujahid Yusof Rawa (PH-Parit Buntar) during the committee stage debate on the Supply Bill 2021 in the Dewan Rakyat today.

Adham said there were an estimated 4.8 million smokers in the country, making up about 21% of the population.

He said 22,000 smokers had been treated under the smoking cessation programme so far, and that the government spent RM2.8 million on the programme last year.

He also said the government provided two types of treatment – nicotine replacement and non-nicotine replacement.
