What is Artificial Intelligence

What is Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a wide-ranging branch of engineering science. This science is concerned with building smart machines capable of performing tasks that typically require human intelligence.

In addition, AI is an interdisciplinary science with multiple approaches. Advancements in machine learning and deep learning are creating a paradigm shift in virtually every sector of the tech industry.

Back in the older days, the professionals described artificial intelligence as machines being able to carry out duties that require human intelligence to do so.

AI Behaviours

Typically, AI systems demonstrate a minimum of a number of subsequent behaviours related to human intelligence. These include:

1. Planning
2. Learning
3. Reasoning
4. Problem-solving
5. Social intelligence
6. Creativity

Types of AI

Artificial Intelligence usually falls under 2 standard categories. These include:

1. Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)

AGI, sometimes known as “Strong AI,” is the kind of artificial intelligence we see in the movies, like the robots from Ghost in the shell or from Terminator. AGI is a machine with general intelligence and, much like a human being, it can use that intelligence to solve any problem.

2. Narrow AI

Sometimes stated as “Weak AI,” this type of Artificial Intelligence operates within a limited context. Narrow AI is usually focused on performing one task extremely well and while these machines could appear intelligent, they’re operating under much more constraints and limitations than even the foremost basic human intelligence.

Everyday uses for AI

AI is so omnipresent nowadays, it recommends what you should buy next online, to understanding what you say to virtual assistants. Some of the examples include Apple’s Siri and Amazon’s Alexa.

Machine learning

Practically all of the achievements mentioned thus far stems from machine learning. Machine learning is a subset of AI which accounts for the overwhelming majority of achievements in recent years. When people speak about AI today they’re generally talking about machine learning.

Currently enjoying something of a resurgence, in simple terms machine learning is where a computing system learns the way to perform a task, instead of being programmed the way to do so.

To learn, these systems are fed huge amounts of knowledge, which they then use to be told a way to perform a selected task, like understanding speech or captioning a photograph. The standard and size of this dataset are very important for building a system able to accurately perform its designated task.

Will AI rob you of your job?

The possibility of artificially intelligent systems replacing much of modern manual labour is possibly a more likely near-future possibility.

While AI won’t replace all jobs, what seems to be is that AI will change the nature of work, with the only question being how rapidly and how profoundly automation will alter the workplace.

However, if you can think optimistically, AI will augment workers in their jobs instead of stealing it.
