Sleep well: Types of Sleep Disorders

Sleep well is important in keeping healthy. Disorders have many types and it will affect the duration of rest. Inadequate sleep or oversleep can cause numerous behavioural and cognitive problems. Here are some example of  sleep disturbances:

1)Insomnia

It is a common disorder which people suffer from it experience the inability to initiate or maintain continuous rest. Therefore, they will lose quantity (number of hours) and quality of sleep.

In elderly insomnia may be due to the reversal of sleeping hours from night to day.

Three factors that cause insomnia:

  • Psychophysiologic factors

Age, stress, and emotional changes are the factors. Worrying excessively about the inability to rest all night will increase the risk of a sleepless night. 

  •  Organic factors 

Diseases and disorders like heart disease, asthma, snoring, obstructive sleep apnea will be the reason for sleeplessness.

  • Psychiatric disorders 

Depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder are examples of disorders.

2)Excessive Sleepiness

Excessive sleepiness, especially during the daytime is another common complaint.

The causes include disorders of the nerves, including head injury and headache.

3)Obstructive sleep

This type of disorder occurs when there is complete or partial obstruction of the upper airway. This leads to interrupted rest and daytime sleepiness.

4)Narcolepsy

Narcolepsy occurs in young adults in their second to third decades of life. It affects men and women equally.

There is excessive daytime sleepiness, paralysis of the muscles during rest, hallucinations during rest, and cataplexy.

The patient may be awake but be completely paralyzed and unable to move.

Circadian Rhythm Sleep Disorders

These are problems that are associated with the timing of rest and wakefulness as the human body has its own clock called the circadian rhythm.

Summary

The amount of rest varies among individuals, but the usual requirement of rest is around 7-9 hours of rest per night. Some individuals may function well with less than 6 hours per night while some may need around 12 hours of rest.

In some cases, there is a medical issue that causes rest. It should be taking more serious action to resolve following this.

Some people may also benefit from pharmaceutical aids to rest at night or increase alertness during the day.

Sleep is important for the maintenance and development of the brain and cognitive function.
