Should Marijuana be legalized in Malaysia?


Marijuana, also popularly known as weed, is a drug that comes from the cannabis plant. You can smoke it, vape it, drink it, or eat it. Most individuals use marijuana for pleasure and recreation. But an expanding number of doctors prescribe it for specific medical conditions and symptoms.

However, it is illegal in most parts of the world due to its harmful side effects on health. It is also a very controversial debate topic that is the people like to debate about.

In recent years, many states in the US have started to legalize the use of this substance. This is because there have been studies to prove its medical benefits.

With strong supporters on all sides of the controversy, the arguments for and against the legalization of marijuana are hot topics. What are the debated pros and cons of medical marijuana?

The pros:
  • Marijuana can soothe certain types of chronic pain
  • It may have anti-cancerous effects, however, research is still limited
  • It is safer than other pain-treating medications such as opioids
  • Marijuana is effective in relieving nausea and vomiting.
  • It can benefit epilepsy patients
The cons:
  • Smoking it can excessively damage your lung tissue
  • If smoked, it will contain cancer-causing compounds
  • Long term use can lead to serious damage to short term memory
  • Can impair your cognitive ability
  • Can lead to serious addiction
Recreational use

There may be many recreational users of Marijuana. However, it is highly inadvisable to use them for recreational purposes. This is because the health risks associated hugely overweight the positives. Guidelines also recommend maximum usage of once a week only.

The bottom line

While there are almost as many pros and cons of using this as a medicinal drug, it is important to understand that there still is insufficient research needed to prove everything. It is better to wait till there are much more available studies before considering to use it. As for legalizing it in Malaysia, it is highly inadvisable because of its addictive qualities which will lead to drug abuse.
