Sabah is a state located in the eastern part of Malaysia. It occupies the northern part of the island of Borneo. The state is the most popular tourist destination in Malaysia. This is because the state has everything you need from tall mountains to dense jungles and to crystal clear beaches.
Here are some must-visit places when travelling to Sabah.
1) Mount Kinabalu
The star attraction of Sabah. The mountain which stands at the height of 4095.2 m above sea level, is the tallest mountain in the whole of Southeast Asia. The time to hike to the peak takes around 2 days. You will stay a night in a hotel midway to the peak. The next early morning you will continue hiking and you will reach the peak during sunrise to soak yourself in the fascinating views from the top.
However, it is important to note that the authorities only allow a limited number of hikers per day so you should book your spot at least many months beforehand.
2) Go snorkelling in the depths of the ocean
The crystal clear waters of the coast in Sabah awaits you to jump into it to explore the depths of the ocean. There is a huge, thriving ecosystem with all kinds of fish and coral reefs. If you are lucky, you may even meet hammerhead sharks or huge sea turtles. Therefore, you can spend the whole day snorkelling and diving there as there are so many islands to explore.
3) Kinabalu national park
Just like the saying ‘you have not visited China if you have not climbed the Great Wall’, you have not visited Sabah if you have not explored the Kinabalu National Park. The national park has a space of about 754 km sq. In the national park, you can trek and observe the thousands of species of plants and animals. One of the notorious animal you can find there is the Proboscis monkey which has a distinctive nose shape.
4) Hunt for the Rafflesia flower
Also known as one of the world’s smelliest flower, the Rafflesia flower has a smell similar to decomposing meat to attract insects. It also has a very unique shape which looks like something from an alien planet. You can really only find them in the jungles of Sabah as the climate there is suitable for them.
Sabah is a place that everyone should visit at least once in their lifetime. The magnificent views from the top of the mountain and sunbathing under the warm sun on the white sandy beaches are just some of the few things you can enjoy there.
