The Democratic Action Party (DAP) member, Ramkarpal Singh has hit out at the former prime minister, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, saying he regrets ever working with Mahathir.
The Penang Bukit Gelugor MP, Ramkarpal lamented the state the country is in today, saying Mahathir was to blame for it. In his Facebook post, he called the former prime minister a liar and a bigot.
“You are why this country needs reform. And today you say you want to ‘save the country’? You are the last person who can,” Ramkarpal said.
Moreover, he then accused Mahathir of betraying the public’s trust by refusing to step aside for Anwar Ibrahim to become prime minister.
In fact, Ramkarpal was referring to the agreement in Pakatan Harapan (PH) presidential council in 2018. The agreement stated that Mahathir becomes the 7th Prime Minister and hand over the post to Anwar Ibrahim after two years.
He then raised the resignation of prime minister in February amidst of the political crisis which brought down the Pakatan Harapan government.
Besides, he also criticized Mahathir’s resignation due to not having the majority was selfish in nature, as he did it his way.
“Never mind that he didn’t bother to consult his government or Cabinet. He did it his way. Now, he wants to be PM again.”
Ramkarpal further questioned Mahathir’s motives and if it was just an exercise to win votes. After Pakatan Harapan won, Mahathir had repeatedly stated that Anwar is not suitable to be prime minister.
Manifesto Not A Bible
Ramkarpal also accused that Mahathir had promised many reforms. However, none of the reforms happened during his administration.
The pre-election manifesto is not a bible that has to be followed and abided by religiously, according to Mahathir Mohamad.
This has become an excuse for not keeping his promises.
For instance, the reforms that did not happen was the ratification of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD) and the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court.
As a result of the “Manifesto not bible” statement, Pakatan Harapan loses supports from its voters.
Internal Security Act
Furthermore, Ramkarpal also took aim at the Internal Security Act (ISA) that was misused by the Barisan Nasional government during the last century.
“I respect what you have done in the past. But you destroyed the judiciary, put countless people inside because they went against you. Remember the Internal Security Act?” Ramkarpal said.
The Internal Security Act (ISA) was accused to against political rivals and activists including his late father Karpal Singh, Lim Kit Siang and Lim Guan Eng even though Mahathir refused to admit the abuse of this law.
Mahathir To Be Next PM
Meanwhile, Ramkarpal pointed toward at a recent statement made by Mahathir’s new party saying that the party will be backing Mahathir to be the next PM.
“As a Malaysian, I must ask myself, isn’t there anybody else?” Ramkarpal questioned.
In a previous interview with Sin Chew Daily, Mahathir said he wants to be the prime minister for the third time. Above all, this is to “correct” the alleged corrupt acts under Najib Razak and Muhyiddin Yassin governments.
Mahathir has formed a new party called Parti Pejuang Tanah Air (PEJUANG). He has nominated by the party as the 9th prime minister after the no-confidence motion against Muhyiddin Yassin.
