With a total of 16 nominations walking into the show, Post Malone outshined himself. Post Malone won nine honours at the 2020 Billboard Music Awards, whereas John Legend performed a heartfelt song that was dedicated to his wife.
Post Malone’s honours
Not only did Post Malone won the show’s biggest honours, top artist, but Kelly Clarkson also wheeled out 8 more trophies after that for the hitmaker.
Post Malone also won top male artist, top rap artist and top rap album. He said that he is honestly blown away by the love everyone’s shown to him. “It’s quite a big deal to me and everybody involved because we work our (butts) off.”, he added on.
Not only that, but he also beat out Billie Eilish for the top prize. But Eilish was still a winner for a top female artist, Billboard 200 album and top new artist.
The 18 years old Eilish with a mask on, told viewers to”please vote, please wear a mask, please wash your hands”. Moreover, Khalid, who won five honours also had similar messages to fans that their voices matter now more than ever.
John Legend’s performance
With an aching voice, John Legend sang passionately while playing the piano during his performance. He told the audience that this is dedicated to Chrissy before singing Never Break, which contains the lyrics “we will never break”.
After Legend’s wife, Chrissy Teigen announced she had a miscarriage, the performance comes right after two weeks. She explained in a social media post heart-wrenchingly that she and Legend drove “home from the hospital with no baby”.
Kelly Clarkson, host of 2020 Billboard Music Awards said “John, that was so beautiful,” following Legend’s performance. “All my love to you and Chrissy.”
There are other performers including Alicia Keys, Khalid, BTS, Sia, Kane Brown, Swae Lee, Bad Bunny, Brandy, Doja Cat, En Vogue, SAINt JHN and Demi Lovato. Demi Lovato has sung her new song “Commander In Chief” aiming at President Donald Trump.
Kelly Clarkson has kicked off the show by singing Steve Winwood’s Higher Love. After Norwegian DJ Kygo remixed Whitney Houston’s cover, this song has became a dance hit last year.
Apart from that, Eddie Van Halen, the guitar rock legend who passed away last week was honoured as the show played a clip of his Billboard Awards performance from 2015. Rapper-activist Killer Mike received the Change Maker Award in Billboard.
