Zoom boom causes booking of surgical and non-surgical treatments to increase amid lockdown. This phenomenon has discovered in countries like Australia, the US, the UK, Japan, and South Korea. Experts said this is due to the frequent use of video conferencing during the pandemic. After months of conducting conversations through video call, we have started to analyze and even criticize our appearances more. It then leads to the zoom boom.

According to the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS), their doctors were reporting up to 70% increase in requests for virtual consultations during the pandemic. Patients also continue to request for treatments after a face-to-face consultation with their surgeons. Similarly, American also showed 64% increment in virtual consultations during the pandemic.

Data showed that the most-asked-for treatments are injectable, followed by a more invasive procedure like liposuction and breast augmentation. The demand for jawline contouring and neck rejuvenation also escalates as people spending more time looking into their computer’s camera and focusing on these areas of their body. However, experts warned that the version of ourselves that we see on our screens tend to be deceiving. They further explained that the angle, lighting and limitations of our devices could lead to distortions of the feature.

Perceptual distortion

Dr Jill Owen, an experienced psychologist says that obsessing over our own image can lead to perceptual distortion. Keep on seeing ourself on-screen makes us obsess over body image and perceived flaws. She added that devices like smartphones could further alter body image as we can adjust the angle when we are holding them.

Today, the rising in the selfie and social media culture also increases the demand for plastic surgery. Selfie-taking and social media are linked with body dysmorphia and negative self-esteem in the last few years of studies.

In this way, the Zoom Boom is just a continuous trend of what has been happening for years.

The pressure of quarantine

The specific environment of lockdown is also one of the reasons of cosmetic-surgery Zoom Boom. For instance, during the lockdown people has more time to think and research on topics related to plastic surgeries. Besides, lockdown allows people to stay at home and heal after they finished doing treatments. The face mask also allowed them to conceal their face when in public. In addition, Covid-19 and lockdown issues lowered some people mood and may lead to less favourable evaluations of themselves. All these reasons elevate the demand for plastic surgeries.
