PETROLIAM Nasional Bhd (Petronas) has started its first Malaysia development in gas production off the coast of Sabah on Feb 6. It is located from the Rotan and Buluh fields in Block H. For further clarification, Block H’s production has included in the ranks of current production from three deepwater blocks offshore Malaysia.

Emphasizing Malaysia’s petroleum investment potential, the gas is generated from a water depth of above 1,100 metres.

The project is considered as the first-ever deepwater gas field aiming at a target production capacity of 270 million standard cubic feet per day. In fact, it has marked a significant milestone in Malaysia’s upstream sector.

In addition, Petronas’ second Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (PFLNG Dua) facility has received the gas for the LNG export market.

Mohamed Firouz Asnan, Petronas senior VP of Malaysia petroleum management said the gas production shows a strong collaboration between various investors and Petronas.

He said in a press release that both parties gather expertise and technologies to monetize stranded deepwater gas field via the evacuation of gas through PFLNG Dua.

He also mentioned that Petronas will become the first global energy company to retain and operate two floating LNG facilities. They expect to operate the facilities upon the expected commercial delivery of its first LNG cargo in mid-March 2021.

Petronas welcomes further investment to explore the more deepwater potential in developing Malaysia as South East Asia’s deepwater hub.

“Moreover, Sabah government that has provided strong support to Malaysia development also plays an important role in realizing this achievement,” Mohamed Firouz said.
