Muafakat Nasional Officially Register As Political Entity

Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) and United Malays National Organization (UMNO) have agreed to register Muafakat Nasional with Registrar of Societies.

Muafakat Nasional Secretary-General, Tan Sri Annuar Musa and Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan announced the matter in a joint statement.

Muafakat Nasional leadership had come to a consensus to give its full commitment to strengthening the unity between two parties. It is considered as part of its preparation to face the 15th General Election (GE15).

“The leadership of both parties have agreed to officially register Muafakat Nasional with the ROS,” it said on Tuesday (Oct 20).

The joint statement also clarified that Muafakat Nasional Consultative Committee Meeting which was scheduled on Monday (October 19) was postponed. This is to comply with the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) that implemented in the Federal Territories.

Besides, it is to reduce the political heat in the country and to ensure that all quarters remain focused on the efforts to fight Covid-19 pandemic, said PAS Secretary-General Takiyuddin Hassan.

The meeting was set to deliberate the current political developments following Anwar’s claim that he has a simple majority. Besides, the issue of Muafakat Nasional’s cooperation with Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (BERSATU) is expected to be discussed in the meeting too.

Last Tuesday, UMNO said that the party will reconsider its support for Perikatan Nasional (PN) which led by Muhyiddin Yassin.

Hence, UMNO will propose new terms to Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin to ensure their political cooperation would continue. The list of demands may include the Deputy Prime Minister position and several key cabinet positions.

UMNO’s Anger

Amid increasing anger and doubt among UMNO’s rank towards BERSATU over its conduct during Sabah state election. In the previous Sabah election, Barisan Nasional holds the largest seat count in Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) with 14 seats. Despite that, Hajiji Noor from BERSATU has appointed as the new Chief Minister of Sabah with just winning 11 seats.

Furthermore, CM position in Perak had given to BERSATU despite they having only 4 seats while UMNO has 25.

“Also, when we came in to form the Federal Government, even though Muhyiddin Yassin’s party did not have the most MPs, we agreed that he would be the prime minister,” Zahid said.

Since then, UMNO leaders have openly admitted that the party is not on good terms with BERSATU for various reasons. This includes accusations that BERSATU often undermines UMNO’s position within the loose coalition.

Hence, it can be seen that this is why BERSATU left out in the cold when PAS and UMNO agreed to register Muafakat Nasional.

Muafakat Nasional Anniversary

In a separate tweet, Annuar Musa said Muafakat Nasional will commemorate their first year anniversary on November 1 at 8 pm. However, there will be no physical mass gathering.

“All celebrations and programmes will be done virtually, there will be no mass gatherings, ” he said on Twitter Tuesday (Oct 20).

Last year, these two Malay-centric parties inked political cooperation with the signing of a joint charter. Then, Muhyiddin announced that BERSATU had agreed to join Muafakat Nasional which backs Perikatan Nasional as a grand coalition on August.
