Its three major SUVs, XC40, XC60 and XC90, account for 60% of Volvo’s total sales. It can be seen that SUVs have become the brand’s key models. Faced with this situation, the original factory plans to develop more SUVs. Including the previously exposed The XC100 flagship, and the more entry-level XC20 are ready to debut.
Volvo’s first pure electric vehicle XC40 Recharge has entered the production process and is expected to be delivered at the end of October. In addition to this electric RV, Volvo is also preparing to launch more new electric vehicles, including the smaller XC20, which is expected to be built on Geely’s SEA platform, focusing on the small cross-border RV market that has been buoyant in recent years.
According to a foreign media “Autoevolution” report, Volvo is promoting a plan for a small sports crossover and is expected to use XC20 as the car name. However, the development of this car is still in the design stage, and foreign media speculate that it will come out in 2025. In addition, the XC20 chassis platform will not use the XC40 CMA modular platform.
Details of Volvo XC20
As we all know, Volvo is now part of China’s Geely Holding Group. XC20 small electric SUV is intended to be built using SEA. The first dedicated platform for electric vehicles launched by the group, which can be applied to small to large electric vehicles with a battery system with a lifespan of 2 million kilometres. Volvo executives also predicted that there will be more new electric vehicles built on the SEA platform in the future.
In addition to XC20, the previous foreign media “Carbuzz” also revealed that Volvo also has a new recreational vehicle that uses EV pure electric power. It is expected to use XC50 as the name of the car. The size is between XC40 and XC60. “Coupe-like” slant back design.
At present, the specifications for the XC50 are not yet clear. But foreign media speculated that it will be based on the Polestar 2 that Volvo’s electric sub-brand Polestar is preparing to launch. It is also a cross-border SUV setting. The power comes from each of the front and rear axles. Its electric motor can have more than 400 horsepower and the maximum endurance is expected to reach 470 kilometres.
It is long-awaited for years
In fact, as early as 2017, Volvo executives had hinted that the XC20 series might be launched. It will become the most entry-level SUV under Volvo, in order to attack the luxury entry-level cross-border leisure market like Audi Q2.
However, Volvo has not released further plans in the future, and only registered the XC20 model trademark in advance.
After many years, Volvo CEO Hakan Samuelsson finally confirmed to the media that he would launch an SUV smaller than the XC40. It would be a pure electric vehicle.
He did not confirm the actual model of this electric car. But it is expected that he is referring to the long-rumoured XC20.
According to Samuelsson, the XC20 is not only smaller in size than the XC40. Furthermore, the XC20 will not use the XC40’s CMA platform. Instead, it will be built on Geely’s SEA (Sustainable Experience Architecture) platform. It is one of the first cars launched on the SEA platform.
There is no clear timetable for XC20. But Samuelsson clearly pointed out that in order to achieve Volvo’s goal of half of the sales of electric vehicles in 2025, XC20 will be one of the important keys. The next generation of 40 series cars is expected to officially launch in 2021, it is also a pure electric vehicle.
