KOTA KINABALU: Sabah’s assistant minister for tourism is optimistic that once Covid-19 travel restrictions are lifted, travellers from South Korea will be drawn to the state. It thanks to a hit television drama series.
In a series about young Koreans going into tech startups to fulfil their dreams. It touts that Kota Kinabalu and the Greek island of Santorini as having the most beautiful sunsets in the world by a character.
In one episode, while boasting about the views of the sunset from the holiday homes of his relatives, the character Cheol San mentions Kota Kinabalu and Santorini.
In addition, the reference to Kota Kinabalu’s sunsets was an endorsement of the natural attractions of Sabah. Sabah’s assistant tourism minister, Joniston Bangkuai, said.
“South Korea is one of our largest tourism markets. After that, I also know that many Koreans who visited Sabah described the Kota Kinabalu sunsets as one of the best in the world,” he told FMT.
In 2019, nearly 30,000 Koreans visited the province, according to statistics from the Sabah Tourism Board.
Moreover, Tanjung Aru beach and the esplanade near the central market of Kota Kinabalu are among the popular locations for sunset views in the state capital.
After that, the Huffington Post portal in the US mention Kota Kinabalu as one of the eight locations in the world with the best sunset views in 2017. Others on the list include China’s West Lake at Hangzhou, Croatia’s Dubrovnik, and France’s Nice.
