Healthiness: Visceral vs subcutaneous fat

Healthiness: Having little fat on the body is normal and healthy because fat is stored all over the human body.

However, not all fat is deposited equally. Different parts of the fat deposit in the body will affect health.

Subcutaneous fat is fat under the skin and visceral fat lies deep within the abdominal walls and surrounds the organs.

Subcutaneous fat in certain areas can actually be a good thing, but visceral fat will link to the risk for diabetes and heart diseases.

Here’s what you should know about the differences between visceral and subcutaneous fat.

Visceral vs. Subcutaneous fat

The term visceral is linked with internal organs. Fat surrounds the stomach, liver, and intestines. It functions as a cushion to the organs.

However, there are some signs of excess visceral fat. The obvious sign is that the people who are apple-shaped versus pear-shape generally have more visceral fat.

In fact, Diet and exercise change the size of the body and the shape where fat deposits accumulate.

Ways to measure body fat

There are several ways to measure body fat and gauge health risk related to weight.

Two common methods are calculating the waist-to-hip ratio and Body Mass Index (BMI), which measures the body’s fat based on height and weight.

Waist measurement is a way to measure visceral fat and use a tool called a calliper. It can give accurate readings but is most useful for measuring subcutaneous fat.

Dangers of visceral fat and subcutaneous fat

There are several risks of having too much visceral fat, including:

Diabetes: Visceral fat increases the risk of diabetes, which can cause long-term problems affecting the eyes, kidneys, heart, brain, feet, and nerves.

Hypertension: Visceral fat may increase the risk for hypertension, or high blood pressure, which heightens the risk for heart attack and stroke.

Healthiness-How to lose fat

The best way to tackle weight loss is by exercising and eating healthy foods like lean proteins, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

Summary

In conclusion, both diet and exercise play a key role in physical health. Also, having an apple-shaped body or a pot-belly is indicative of excess visceral fat.

Visceral fat will cause several health risks, while subcutaneous fat can provide some benefits. However, too much of both fats can be detrimental to your health.
