PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s Islamic Development Department (Jakim) must also be responsible for the uproar over the meat cartel as they were the authority responsible for granting halal certification for food items, says PKR President Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim Ibrahim (pic).
This is the most evil and shameful instance of how Muslims’ flesh and blood can be abused.
This is not only a matter for the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry. However, for Jakim as well, as they are the ones issuing halal certification. In his speech during the launch of the “100 Arts and Literature Essays of the Reformation Era 2008” in Shah Alam on Tuesday. Anwar said that they must be kept accountable together (Dec 29).
Anwar also said, without mincing his words, that the controversy was not a matter that Malaysians should forgive.
There has to be a political will to react to this matter and prosecute those who have abused religion.
“This is the most classic method to manipulate religion aside from poisoning the people,” he said.
Jakim Research Division Director Datuk Dr Sirajuddin Suhaimee said on Monday (Dec 28), investigations into the meat cartel conflict were not being undertaken by Jakim. It is because other government agencies were already investigating the matter.
Recently, authorities busted a cartel that had been smuggling meat from Ukraine, Brazil, Argentina and China. And repackaging them with a halal logo.
Also, at a warehouse in Senai, Johor, where 1,500 tonnes of frozen meat worth RM30mil was seized, a raid was carried out.
Allegedly, the gang, suspected to have been running for a few years. It had used the warehouse as a place to make fake labels and stamps to be pasted on packages of meat that were not halal approved.
