PETALING JAYA: Calls for a’ new alliance’ with DAP and Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim are bound to split Umno, warns Secretary-General Tan Sri Annuar Musa of Barisan Nasional.
He said the so-called “jajaran baru” (new alignment) was being propagated by some party leaders using official party platforms, sending wrong signals to the ground.
“Some (grassroots) misconstrued the message as coming from the leadership, although it clearly contradicts the party’s policy (against forging ties with DAP and Anwar)”. He said in a statement on Sunday (Dec 27).
In reaction to attempts by some leaders who advocated for political “realignment” with DAP and Anwar, he said this.
Annuar cautioned that such a move in the next general election would cause Umno to lose even its strongholds.
“Will the wager on Malay unity and solidarity to topple Pakatan Harapan be compromised in the name of a new alignment?” he asked.
Annuar said that DAP should be “proud” to notice that their spokespersons have been some of the top Umno leaders.
“Some ride up and down to explain their narrative on why UMNO should approve DAP and Anwar.
But the grassroots, in general, have expressed concerns against such a campaign. It is evident that Umno is going for a division,’ he said.
Those who stood by the decision of the party stayed silent, Annuar said.
“Hopefully we do not fall for a second time because of mistakes made by those at the top,” he said.
Annuar cautioned that Umno would lose its position in uniting the Malays, and if it continued with this new alliance, the baton could be passed on to another faction.
