TOKYO: After a flood of concerns and ridicule about bugs, compatibility problems and even health risks, Sony is withdrawing the hyped Cyberpunk 2077 from PlayStation stores around the world, the company said Friday.
Reportedly, the dystopian-themed title is one of the most expensive video games ever made. And its release on December 10 was highly awaited. However, the rollout was far from smooth.
Some gamers have posted glitchy graphics videos on Twitter, with others combining screenshots from far older games with cynical comments like: “I’m blown away on PS4 by Cyberpunk’s graphics and environment!” ”
“SIE (Sony Interactive Entertainment) strives to ensure a high level of customer satisfaction. Thus we will start offering a full refund to all gamers who have purchased Cyberpunk 2077 via the PlayStation Store,” Sony said Friday.
SIE will also, before further notice, delete Cyberpunk 2077 from the PlayStation Store.’
This week in January and February, the Warsaw-based developer CD Projekt RED posted an apology. They promised to fix bugs and crashes” with updates. Also, they will provide refunds to gamers who are not able to wait.
The release of Cyberpunk 2077 was postponed twice this year. After one critic complaining, it had triggered an epileptic seizure, CD Projekt RED was forced to add health alerts.
The Polish company said last week that it was looking into a more permanent solution” to fix the as soon as possible” health danger.
The delays that the company blamed on the coronavirus pandemic and the difficulty of building a world so vast for nine different platforms. It is including Xbox consoles and PCs, sparked a fierce backlash, including death threats.
Despite the issues, on the basis of 69 ratings, entertainment rating website Metacritic has given Cyberpunk 2077 a score of 87 out of 100.
But gamers’ scores on Metacritic were much less upbeat. The Cyberpunk 2077 is receiving a score of 7 out of 10 based on over 20,500 user reviews.
The gun-toting “V” is the main character, who makes his way through Night City, a conflict-ridden American megacity.
The game also features Hollywood star Keanu Reeves’ face and voice. The best known for the “Matrix” trilogy and the “John Wick” movies.
The game is described by Metacritic as an open-world action-adventure tale set in Night City, a megalopolis obsessed with power, glamour and body alteration.”
According to analysts at Polish bank BOS, CD Projekt RED invested an estimated 1.2 billion zloty (US$330 million) to make Cyberpunk 2077. It would make it one of the most expensive games ever made.
Thanks to its hugely popular “The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt”, a gloomy fantasy whose monster-slaying hero is blessed with supernatural abilities, the company rose to global prominence five years ago.
But since last week’s Cyberpunk 2077 launch, it has lost billions in value, stock figures showed on Monday.
In addition, Sony’s stock was up 2.7% at 10,295 yen on Friday morning.
In the gaming industry, delays are becoming more common as games get larger, more costly and with more people involved.
This year with several studios forced to function with developers working from home, the coronavirus pandemic has complicated things further.
