Among Us, the trendiest game played by people across the world is a 2018 murder mystery game in space.
This game is released in 2018 by a three-person company, InnerSloth. It is still not known by many people at that time until a Twitch streamer with a fanbase of 2.8 million viewers began to play it.
This game had grown to over 3.5 million concurrent users worldwide and reached over a million players on September 3. It is extremely popular until its developers decided to cancel a sequel to this game to better focus on growing the existing version.
Forest Willard, a developer of Among Us at InnerSloth said that they cancelled the sequel because they saw the opportunity to give back players quicker than creating a brand new and better version. He also said, “It will be more work in the long run, but we’re excited for players to update the game, and suddenly there’s a brand new feature or map that unlocks new experiences.”
What is this game about?
Among Us is developed based on other social deduction party games such as Mafia. It is about a group of innocents who live their normal lives. Meanwhile, some killers who have hidden their identities, commit crime at night. The group of innocents must find out and get rid of the imposters before they lose their majority. Else, the innocents will lose.
Among Us is free to play with integrated ads on mobile while it costs $5 in PC games store Steam or the indie store Itch.io. Gamers are allowed to make additional purchases to customize and decorate their in-game characters.
The game allows 4-10 players who will be randomly assigned roles of either crewmates or imposter. Throughout the game, crewmates need to complete their tasks and imposters try to murder the crew. Meanwhile, the imposters will try to sabotage the spaceship without getting caught too.
This game involves lots of accusations, lying, speculations and crafty denials. These characteristics are indeed an excellent recipe for social media engagement. Even YouTube’s largest individual creator, PewDiePie has played it.
What’s next for Among Us?
Developers in InnerSloth know that they must maintain the game’s popularity by keeping players engaged. Hence, that is why they decided to cut a sequel. Cassia Curran, an adviser at Wings Interactive also said that making a sequel would only end up dividing the audience. It is best to keep the player engaged on the current game and drive further monetization through in-game purchases.
Willard, the InnerSloth developer said the team plans to insert new features to Among Us. The features include the ability to add friends, controls customizations and a colour-blind mode.
